Rambutan is native to Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. In Thailand, most of Rambutan production are in eastern and southern area, Surat Thani provice is the largest producer in Thailand. Rambutan fruit is a round oval drupe 3-6 cm tall and 3-4 cm broad , borne in a loose pendent cluster of 10-20 together. The leathery skin is reddish and covered with fleshy pliable spines, the fruit flesh is translucent, whitish or very pale pink, with a sweet, mildly acidic flavour.
